Todd Salnas Appointed as President of St. Joseph Health in Sonoma County

St. Joseph Health, which operates Sonoma County’s largest hospital and provides the most comprehensive, advanced health care services in the North Coast region, announced today that Todd Salnas has been promoted to its President in Sonoma County, effective July 1, 2012.

Salnas, 39, joined St. Joseph Health, Sonoma County, in 2009 and has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He succeeds Kevin Klockenga as the health care provider’s leading executive in the county. The move will enable Mr. Klockenga to fully step up into the role to which he was appointed last summer – Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph Health’s Northern California region – while entrusting local operations to a proven leader who is recognized as one of health care’s up-and-comers.

“Todd is an extraordinarily gifted and strategically minded young executive,” said Mr. Klockenga, who as the regional CEO oversees St. Joseph Health in Sonoma, Napa and Humboldt counties and to whom Salnas will continue to report. “Todd is the sort of innovative, principled president we need to lead our Sonoma County team through the unprecedented challenges of health care reform while together we carry on the healing mission begun here 62 years ago by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.”

Mr. Salnas will assume the top local post from Mr. Klockenga, whose tenure as President and CEO here began in 2008. Since July 2011, Mr. Klockenga has juggled dual roles, continuing to lead St. Joseph Health’s 2,287 employees in Sonoma County while also filling his new regional post. During the past year, Mr. Salnas took on a growing scope of responsibility, continuing to distinguish himself for his collaborations with staff, physicians and community leaders to increase access to quality, safe, integrated and affordable care at all levels – from the primary care doctor’s exam room to palliative and hospice care.

"I’m honored to have this opportunity to serve as president for such a long-established and successful health care ministry,” Mr. Salnas said. “While health care will undergo vast changes in the coming years, I’m very optimistic for St. Joseph Health’s future and our ability to follow the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Relying on collaboration between our employees, medical staff, volunteers and community partners, we’ll continue to care for all who need our services.”

The boards of trustees at Santa Rosa Memorial and Petaluma Valley hospitals unanimously approved Mr. Salnas’s promotion.

"Memorial’s Board of Trustees is very confident that this succession and progression in our senior leadership will serve to enhance the hospital's performance and regional success,” said Jim Adams, chairman of the Memorial board and CEO of REACH Air Medical Services. “As Kevin works to integrate the regional presence of St. Joseph Health, Todd's tremendous energy and grassroots leadership will help the hospital prepare for the rapidly changing requirements associated with health care reform."

Jim Carr, chairman of the Petaluma Valley board, credited Mr. Salnas for his important role in preparing Petaluma Valley Hospital to meet future challenges, including health care reform: “Keeping continuity at the leadership level is critical for Petaluma Valley Hospital at this pivotal time,” Mr. Carr said. “Working with Mr. Salnas, I've become increasingly familiar with his depth of knowledge and experience in health care. He has demonstrated a commitment to work with all people and to maintain St. Joseph Health’s mission, all the while never forgetting his role as a husband and a father."

In Sonoma County, St. Joseph Health operates: two acute-care hospitals (the 278-bed Memorial Hospital, the region’s Level II trauma center, and the 80-bed Petaluma Valley Hospital, which the organization leases); hospice services based in Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Healdsburg; palliative care; urgent care centers in Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa and Windsor; home health services; outpatient behavioral health services; outpatient lab, imaging and other diagnostic services; affiliated primary and specialty care providers; and community benefit and preventive health programs which care for people throughout the area, regardless of insurance status.

St. Joseph Health has received commendations from consumers and independent health care surveyors, including a Joint Commission “top clinical performer” honor given to Petaluma Valley in September 2011 and the National Research Corporation’s Consumer Choice award, which Memorial has received for 15 out of the past 16 years, acknowledging it as consumers’ most preferred hospital in Sonoma County.

Following a national search, Salnas was recruited three years ago to this faith-based, not-for-profit system, based in Orange, California. At the time, he was chief operating officer for Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, a 444-bed facility in Whittier, California. Previously, he had served as administrative director for Phoenix Baptist Hospital and Medical Center and as a financial and medical management resident for HealthPartners Health Plan of Phoenix, AZ.

Salnas earned a dual master’s degree in Business Administration and Health Sciences Administration from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Science from the University of Arizona. He has served in volunteer roles on numerous professional and civic committees, including the American College of Healthcare Executives, the California Healthcare Executives, and locally on the St. Eugene Cathedral School Council.

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Salnas lived in Arizona for more than 20 years before moving to California in 2000. He resides in Santa Rosa with his wife, Jenny, and their three young children.
