12/03/2014

Today the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) conducted a secret ballot election at Petaluma Valley Hospital in which 137 eligible service and technical employees had the opportunity to vote on union representation by the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW). The NLRB must certify the election results before they become official.

In today’s vote, out of the 137 Petaluma Valley employees eligible to vote, 91 valid ballots were cast. Out of these valid ballots, 78 were cast in favor of the union, and 13 votes were cast against unionization.

The bargaining unit is comprised of service and technical positions including but not limited to Nutrition Services, Radiology and Laboratory Technicians, Housekeepers and Registration staff.

“At this time, it’s important to focus on what unites us, and that is our deeply held commitment to provide safe, quality care and compassion to our patients and their families,” said Todd Salnas, President of St. Joseph Health in Sonoma County, which leases and operates Petaluma Valley Hospital. “Our entire leadership team is proud of how employees have remained committed to our core values of Dignity, Service, Excellence, and Justice – delivering high-caliber and compassionate care during what could have been a disruptive process. It is their spirit of respect, professionalism and caring that makes Petaluma Valley special for our patients and our community.”

“We at Petaluma Valley respect the decision made by eligible bargaining unit members who cast their ballots today, and appreciate everyone who took the opportunity to vote,” said Jane Read, Vice President of Operations of Petaluma Valley Hospital. “We will continue to respect one another’s views and unite through our shared commitment to maintain a healing environment for our patients and their families.”
