MitraClip - Mitral Valve Repair

MitraClip is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat leakiness or “regurgitation” of the mitral valve. When the heart pumps, the mitral valve ensures that all blood moves forward into the body. Mitral regurgitation occurs when the heart’s mitral valve does not close tightly, causing blood to flow backward or “leak” in the heart. This can lead to buildup of fluid in the lungs and cause severe symptoms including:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue with exertion
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation
  • Heart failure

The surgeons at the The Norma and Evert Pearson Heart and Vascular Institute are experts in performing the MitraClip procedure.

Benefits include:

  • Reduction in heart failure-related hospitalizations
  • Minimally invasive - does not require opening the chest and temporarily stopping the heart
  • Effective for high-risk patients who previously had no options
  • Expedited recovery and reduced scarring when compared to open heart surgery
